Amman 350 holds Candlelight Vigil to call for a “REAL DEAL” in COPENHAGEN
One of Over 3,204 Simultaneous Events in Over 139 Countries
[Amman, Jordan]: December 11th—People from around Amman gathered on Friday night for a candlelight vigil to show that the world wants a real deal at the Copenhagen climate talks, as part of the second largest day of climate change activism ever. Participants joined more than 3,000 communities in 139 countries as part of a global day of action coordinated by 350.org, tcktcktck.org, avaaz.org to urge world leaders to take bold and immediate steps to address climate change and reduce carbon emissions.
Citizens and youth groups rallied together in forming the number 350 out of candlelight. Many scientists, climate experts and progressive national governments are now saying that 350 parts per million is the safe upper limit for carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. The number 350 has become a symbol of climate action since a massive global day of demonstrations organized by the environmental group 350.org on October 24th.
Supporters at the vigil took turn writing messages on a 6×2 m wall asking for all countries to urgently sign a climate agreement that is:
a) Fair – by securing $200 billion in climate financing for poorer countries
b) Ambitious – by peaking global carbon emissions by 2015, and returning atmospheric carbon dioxide levels below 350 parts per million
c) Binding – legally enforceable
ABOUT 350.ORG
Founded by author and environmentalist Bill McKibben, 350.org is the first large-scale grassroots global campaign against climate change. Its supporters include leading scientists, the governments of 92 countries, and a huge variety of environmental, health, development and religious NGOs. All agree that current atmospheric levels of CO2—390 parts per million—are causing damage to the planet and to its most vulnerable people, and that government action at the Copenhagen climate conference is required to bring the earth’s carbon level swiftly down to 350 ppm.
350.org is member of TckTckTck – a global alliance of faith groups, non-governmental organizations, trade unions and over a million individuals calling for a fair, ambitious, and binding international climate change treaty. For more information, visit www.350.org.
